501(c)(3) tax-exempt status via our partnership with the Windward Fund

Resilient & Windward Fund

The vision of Resilient is to build a global network of philanthropists and foundations worldwide. In line with this ethos, we have decided to expand our activities to the US and chosen the Windward Fund to support us in the journey.

The Windward Fund offers many services to support charitable work, including comprehensive fiscal sponsorship to projects that already exist as legal entities but do not have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. To facilitate this, Windward accepts donations into a restricted fund and will re-grant to Resilient, which has equivalency determination, to support its mission.

In this regard, we have teamed up with the Windward Fund, which seeks to raise public awareness about the importance of conservation, climate and environmental issues, sustainable food systems, and the protection of land, wildlife, and other natural resources. We co-created the Resilient Fund project with the Windward Fund, a US-based 501(c)(3) public charity.

This collaboration enables philanthropists to achieve social goals more quickly and support Resilient. A gift to Windward on behalf of the Resilient project may entitle donors to a charitable contribution deduction against income tax.

More Information on Windward

Since its launch in 2015, the Windward Fund has quickly become one of the leading vehicles to fund water, climate resilience, and conservation work in the United States. The Windward Fund hosts education and grant-making projects that address conservation from a range of angles. Windward also provides a platform for stakeholders to convene and collaborate on various issues, leveraging the work of other conservation projects housed at the fund to strengthen their efforts and advance the field. The fund is managed by specialists experienced in conservation and environmental issues who provide strategic support, guidance on best practices, and operational and administrative expertise to hosted projects.

As a fiscal sponsor, Windward has centered equity across its strategic priorities and practices. Windward is in a unique position to positively shift the power dynamics between the funder and grantee and has done so by promoting participatory grant-making and decision-making structures, and by implementing streamlined grant-making processes. Each project has an external advisory board, some newer projects have implemented a participatory grant-making model ceding decision-making power about criteria, strategy, and funding. The Windward model allows funders the flexibility to create processes that differ from their home institution, which can foster greater responsiveness and more equitable practices.

Management

Windward is managed by a staff with deep experience in conservation, climate change, and food systems policy, advocacy, and programs both domestically and abroad. Its staff have a wide network of relationships among conservation donors and nonprofits, and can facilitate convenings to connect like-minded practitioners and help them better work toward our shared goals of protecting our planet and its inhabitants.

Windward is overseen by an independent board of directors that has extensive experience in philanthropy, nonprofit management, and environmental issues.
